Scone Equine Hospital accepts veterinary students for 2-4 week externships who are in their clinical years of studies as part of University externship requirements. We do limit the number of vet students we can accommodate at any one-time dependant on the time of year. Our breeding season is from August through to December and this is the period of the year we see the highest number of on-farm and hospitalised cases.
Vet students on externship are scheduled on a week by week basis and are assigned to the different sections of the Scone Equine Hospital and with individual vets on ambulatory days. If the hospitalised ICU caseload allows, we schedule vet students on weekday evenings to observe and assist our interns and clinicians in management of afterhours admissions. In this situation students have nothing scheduled in the following day.
