Our equine surgical unit is led by registered specialists and highly experienced equine surgeons trained to world-best standards.
Veterinary anaesthetists, qualified nursing staff and veterinary interns support the surgeons as part of a co-ordinated team. Our 24 hour surgical service for SEH and referral clients is an essential component of the care we provide for critical cases such as those requiring colic surgery or caesarean section. There are approximately 2,000 procedures undertaken annually, making this one of the busiest equine surgical facilities in Australia. Our surgeons have presented lectures on equine surgery around the world including Hong Kong, Dubai, Germany, England and Australia in recent years. We are committed to providing new techniques using the latest equipment to ensure the best possible treatment for your horse. In the last few years we have pioneered the use of absorbable screws in foals and developed new techniques for the correction of limb deviations in foals.
We have used laparoscopic assisted techniques to treat mares with blocked oviducts, achieving a pregnancy rate of 80% in previously barren mares and Uteropexy surgery to improve uterine positioning in older mares.
The surgery has several operating theatres/spaces to accomodate multiple surgeries at any given time and five recovery rooms set up to offer rope-assisted recoveries from general anaesthesia. The surgery is equipped with all the necessary equipment to perform internal fixation, including the latest locking screw technology, arthroscopy, laparoscopy, video-endoscopy and Diode laser. Anaesthesia is undertaken by experienced veterinarians supported by the latest monitoring equipment, including pulse oximetry, capnography, ventilator, invasive and non-invasive blood pressure, ECG, and blood gas analysis.
