On Friday 29 August, Scone Equine Hospital marked a landmark chapter in its proud 70-year history with the official opening of its new purpose-built facility. The ceremony, officiated by the Member for Upper Hunter, Mr David Layzell, drew clients, community members, and industry leaders from across the region and beyond to celebrate the occasion.
The new hospital affirms Scone Equine Hospital’s position as Australia’s largest and most recognised equine veterinary practice. Nationally and internationally renowned, the Hospital provides advanced expertise in equine surgery, medicine, diagnostic imaging, reproduction, and neonatal care. During the busy breeding season, the hospital employs more than 120 staff, including specialists, veterinarians, experienced nurses and veterinary technicians, all dedicated to caring for horses ranging from elite athletes to much-loved companions and retirees. As part of the wider Scone Equine Group, the hospital maintains strong partnerships with universities nationwide, playing a vital role in clinical research and in training the next generation.
Director & Registered Specialist in Equine Surgery, Dr Angus Adkins said ‘Your horses deserve nothing less, and they deserve the service we can provide, with the amazing people who staff this hospital. They are second to none.’
The completion of the project in March 2024 realised a vision more than two decades in the making – to bring all of Scone Equine Hospital’s services under one roof in a world-class facility. Chief Executive Officer, Mr Scott Shann, described the development as a pivotal milestone for both the practice and the Upper Hunter. “The strength of the region as the heart of Australia’s thoroughbred industry, coupled with Racing NSW’s investment at Scone Racecourse, made this the ideal home for a facility of this calibre. As the horse population grows, so too does the need for advanced veterinary care,” he said.
The official opening is both a proud achievement for the hospital and a significant milestone for the Upper Hunter, reinforcing Scone’s reputation as the Horse Capital of Australia and a global leader in equine veterinary excellence.
