Body Beautiful foals for the first time

Laparoscopy | Dr Angus Adkins

Body Beautiful came to Scone Equine Hospital as a problem mare failing over the previous two years to present with a fifteen-day pregnancy. Having missed the previous two stud seasons, the laparoscopy procedure was an opportunity to solve the problem. The procedure was recommended to Duncan Grimley of Glastonbury Farm who then approached Dr Angus Adkins at Scone Equine Hospital.

Duncan Grimley says the mare came out of work as a good race mare with a good pedigree. “The problem was she’d failed to produce a fifteen day pregnancy for two years despite being covered by four or five stallions,” he said. “We knew it wasn’t a stallion problem and because she was worth it, we decided to investigate further.”

“We’d heard this procedure was new and at this stage we didn’t know if it would work or not. It was worth doing a procedure that was relatively inexpensive and it worked. We are now lining up another three or four mares who all have similar problems for this procedure,” he said.

Body Beautiful underwent the laparoscopy procedure in 2009 and is due to foal in Mid-October.
